Sambar Deer first came to Australia in the early 1860's from Ceylon.
A Victorian herd was established in a West Gippsland swamp. By the turn of the century because of the demands for pasture and settlement the deer were driven to the foot hills and nearby mountains. A mature male (stag) can reach 270kg in body weight and stand 122cm at the shoulder .
The typical antler growth is a uniform three points either side and a representative trophy is 53--73cm in length.Hunting and bush fires over the years has pushed this mighty deer throughout the great divide of Victoria and in to New South Wales. The sambar is a tough and powerful animal, hunting is generally difficult and without boundaries to impede it the future of Sambar Deer in Australia is guaranteed.
